Media Technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages.

Ancillary Texts. Review and Poster.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts.

Film Poster.

For our film, we had to create a poster which would be used for Marketing. If a film is marketed well, this will have a drastic effect on the amount of people who view the film.

Posters would be shown on the side of busses, newspaper advertising, reviews, television adverts ect...

From researching into the current posters of successful full length feature films that have already been made, we could then try and use some of their conventions to make our poster successful.

Examples of this could be the type of poster, the font, where information is placed, characters faces, should we use a still from the film, the list goes on.

Before we made the final poster, we came up with a mock version. These were hand drawn and mock ups were made on the computer.

We also drew some mock ups.

Final Poster :

On a film poster, only the main actors are shown. This is because we want to draw the audience in because there is a high class actor involved, and it would be impossible to place all the actors who made the movie on the film poster.
Alex is the main character in Exodus, he is also the protagonist. So we though it vital they he be placed at the front of the film poster, and also the largest in size.

The poster also does not give too much of the film away to the audience, it still leaves the audience thinking.

The font used is called 'Trajan Pro.' This font was used as it is quite sublte yet it still stands out. The title is white in colour, placed on a black background. This made sure it was immediately visable to the audience.
The tagline 'Some things are better left unseen' is placed below the title, as that is where the majority of taglines are placed on full length feature film posters.

Review.

The film review is also a key aspect to how well a film does. This is seen in magazines, newspapers, websites, and emails. We felt that this had equal weight as to the film poster in regards to how successful a film is. If a review is good, the more likely people are going to see your film if it is released.

In order to come up with our film review, we watched the film over and over again. This meant we could write a review which was from an audience member’s point of view, and not from the makers, i.e ourselves.

In order to come up with the layout, we researched other film reviews. Nearly all reviews have a still shot of an important moment in the film. However, this moment will not be too revealing as to give away the plot or story of the film. We chose to take a still of the four boys walking. It sets up a little bit about what the film is about, but it doesn’t ruin the film for future watchers.

We researched into the layout of current film posters such as Kidulthood. We realised that the conventions of these reviews showed the release date, the title, main actors, a still from the movie, the main text and a star rating. We couldn’t put a 5 star rating, as only exceptional films, made my renowned directors; including well known actors with big budgets receive 5 star ratings. Our film was made on a limited budget, and all the equipment used belonged to the school, so it was not overly expensive.

We decided to have the main text in one column as we felt that it suited our film, yet it also looked aesthetically pleasing.

Audience Feedback

The screen shot above shows the editing of the production logo. The program used is called final cut express. We played around with some effects such as dissolves, swoops and fades. We came to the conclusion that a fade of the sound and a dissolve of the image to a negative image works best.

The screen shot above shows our production logo after it has been dissolved out. The bars on the bottom left of the screen show the way we have faded out the sound.

FIlming Saturday 14th December 2010

During the editing stage of the footage that we filmed on 11th December 2010, some of the individual character shots do not seem as clear and as crisp as we would like.

We plan to re-shoot these today after school.
The shots include two individuals walking on the pavement and talking to his friends.

Although these shots are less than one second each, i feel that this is very important as it establishes the relationship between the audience and the character.

Eddies and Maurice's shots are focused in the wrong area. We can correct this by using a focus pull so the characters face is clear while the background seems blurry.
